The Director
Mrs. Petrella, a Pocatello native, welcomes all students to her program. She received her Bachelors of Music Education (2013) from Idaho State University as well as her Masters of Instructional Technology and Development Degree in 2019. She is excited to bring her technological experience and development skills to her students at Hawthorne. Every student is valued and every student deserves the chance to develop their individual music experience.

Philosophy of Instruction
As a music instructor, it is my personal and professional responsibility to provide each student a welcoming environment, a strong foundation of musical fundamentals, and positive encouragement of personal, academic, and musical growth. My goal is to provide inspiration and guidance for all of my students to seek creativity, learn life skills, and obtain musical knowledge. Using the hands-on incorporation of musical exposure and experience, my students will gain the ability to grow musically and creatively. I believe that musical ensembles, guest performers and speakers, solo and chamber groups, as well as other tools, can be used to expand my students’ exposure and experience in music.
Students learn the most about music by handling its materials. My program at Hawthorne Middle School will focus on building students’ fundamentals of musicianship using techniques tailored to each student, integration of technology, effective outreach, and exploration of musical expression. While doing so, students will learn important skills that can be applied to all areas of study and future career choices. By this, it is my responsibility to encourage, model, and inspire the growth of my students. Life skills learned in band will be of use to my students not only in the academic world but in their personal and professional world.

Philosophy of Assessment
It is my philosophy to assess every student equally and to take into account their individual needs in shaping appropriate evaluations. I, as the director, seek to ensure all my students have fair access to insightful feedback, constructive analyses in regards to all their activities, and grading based on academic performance. Every student has the right to view, ask questions, and express their concerns in regards to any and all assessments. All assessments are outlined in the curriculum, handouts, assignment explanations, and all instructional rubrics. I welcome all students and parents to be informed in seeking information and being knowledgeable about what is expected of them in my class as well as all assignments. It is my belief that students who are well informed demonstrate an active interest in their own learning - a building block of self-efficacy and responsibility. Should any parent, student, or administrator have any questions about any of the assessments asked of students, please contact me (the director).
